The article published in The Telegraph on 25 October 2014: (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/bank-accounts/11180418/Letter-box-scam-almost-cost-me-20000.html), describes a growing series of "letter box" frauds targeting flat residents, whereby scammers would make off with residents' post. By taking on the tenants' identity, the thieves would steal the victims' money by making use of the stolen bills, letters and bank statements. On a yearly basis, fraud victims lose approximately £5 million. One publicised case is that of Sarah Steed, an IT consultant, who was almost defrauded of £20,000 in 2014. In the young woman's case, thieves were unsuccessful in intercepting letters that were securely contained in a private box in the communal lobby. One Friday evening, Ms Stead found in the post a letter from Sainsbury's Bank saying the user had been declined for a loan of £10,000. Immediately concerned, Ms Stead called the bank and sorted out the matter. But the scammers were not deterred. Ms Stead later found another bogus loan application, again for £10,000, with the bank Santander this time. "I went into immediate panic mode...it is terrifying to have someone know all of your personal information," the victim says. It took several calls to Santander before the loan application could be stopped. Next, Ms Stead hid all personal details available via social media, including Instagram photos and tweets. Since then, Ms Stead has joined Cifas a fraud protection service that enhances security to the fraud victim's banking activity.
